This year has been a revelation of sorts for the actors of South. While of of them has become a sensation worldwide, the others have managed to hold their own as well. From triple roles to dramatic transformations to realistic performances, we have witnessed a little bit of everything. We have also witnessed actor solely committing to one project and a few other dabbling in multiple projects. It’s been a year of never done before acts for sure. This year we are looking at those actor who have managed show us another side to them that we didn’t know of before. While the character might have been run of the mill, the performance wasn’t. In no particular order, here is a list of all the best actors of South this 2017! At the end of it, VOTE and tell us who do you think is the BEST South actor of 2017?
Vijay in Mersal – The Tamil actor played three roles in Mersal – That of a chieftain, a doctor and a magician. While the magician and the doctor were long lost brothers, the role of the chieftain was set in a different era. While they looked similar in terms of physical appearance, each of their personalities were distinct from the one another, courtesy Thalapathy Vijay’s skill as an actor. With Mersal, Vijay has proved his versatility and talent as an actor yet again. Even after 25 years, the Tamil superstar never ceases to blow you away! Jr NTR in Jai Lava Kusa – Jr NTR surprised his fans with a triple role this year. While Vijay and Jr NTR have played three characters this year, the similarity ends there. As Jai, Lava, Kusa, Jr NTR upped his performance from his previous ones. His menacing act as Jai was the most liked by fans, celebs. But Lava and Kusa were appreciated all the same. The film’s story was held together only because Jr NTR’s act. His triple dhamaka was the highlight of this Dussehra release. Ajith Kumar in Vivegam: Thala Ajith went through a major makeover for this film. Considering he was to play an anti-terrorist squad leader, the otherwise not-really-fit actor decided to crank it up a notch and get really fit and toned. He went through rigorous physical training for his role as Ajay Kumar. The end results were for us to see! For the first time, he sported six pack abs and, he also pulled off all the stunts without any doubles. The actor was at is fittest best for Vivegam and this coupled with an action packed performance! While the story seemed over the top, Ajith Kumar as AK was admirable. Prabhas in Baahubali: On Baahubali 2’s release, this Telugu actor more than doubled his fan base overnight. He caught everybody’s attention with his act as Shivu but with Amarendra Baahubali, he had us swooning. He not only went through a dramatic physical transformation, but he also brought to life, the mighty yet humble king – Amarendra Baahubali. His charisma on screen was undeniable and that drew fans, critics and the rest of the wolrd towards him. He will always be known as Baahubali, because of this historical drama.
Vijay Sethupathi in Vikram Vedha – Vijay Sethupathi put on an ace gangsta act as Vedha, the gangsta in Pushkar Gayatri’s suspense thriller film. His salt n pepper bearded look, his bulky physique brought out the look but it was Vijay Sethupathi himself that made us fall in love with Vedha. His performance as the ruthless yet vulnerable gangsta was applause worthy. The thin lines between Vijay and Vedha blurred and the two became one owing to the Tmail actor’s skill.
Vijay Devarakonda in Arjun Reddy – After playing the charming guy next door in Pelli choopulu, Vijay had a pleasant surprise in store for us with Arjun Reddy. Gone was the cute guy, entered the rebel who cared a damn! His act coupled with an unconventional plot made Arjun Reddy one of the films to watch out for.
Nandamuri Balakrishna in Gautamiputra Satakarni – For his 100th film, Nandamuri Balakrishna took on a challenge. The otherwise massy hero decided to play a lesser known ruler of the Satavahana dynasty. He went a la royal and sure made heads turn! He definitely looked fit to rule and everyone was impressed with the veteran actor who managed to pull off something even in his 100th project. Krish’s direction, Nandamuri’s royal presence coupled together gave us a memorable historical drama
Karthi in Theeran – This year, Karthi pulled off two roles – The chauvinistic, temperamental lover and the fearless righteous cop. For both characters, he went through a dramatic physical transformation. While both tested his skill as an actor it was his role as a cop in Theeran that garnered him much appreciation
Rana in Baahubali, The Ghazi Attack, Nene Raju Nene Mantri – Rana Daggubati has struck a hat trick this year with three distinct films and three different performances – He has played a Naval officer, a ruthless king and an over ambitious politician and pulled off each of them with much skill. When it comes to Rana, there is so much to choose from. He has been part of the biggest blockbuster, a commercial and an unusual story.
